Rules for “Superheroes Without Superpowers” Fan Fiction Contest

The Curious Reader, in collaboration with Leaping Windows, is running a writing contest for all comic book fans, and even for those who are not! Think you have it in you? Then don’t wait any longer, pick up a pen (or switch on your computer to be more accurate) and let your creative juices flow! The top three entries will receive prizes and will be also be published on The Curious Reader website.

Before you begin, please read this:
  1. Entrants must be 18 years or over on the closing date.
  2. Entrants must be residents of India.
  3. Entries must be in English.
  4. Entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not have been published or accepted for publication elsewhere in print or online including blogs or personal websites.
  5. Entries must be fan fiction based on superheroes without superpowers and may be written in any style or form.
  6. Multiple entries by one author are allowed.
  7. Entries must not be more than 500 words. An overage of 10% is permitted. You can also add accompanying artwork if you’d like.
  8. All entries must be sent in a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx) to writing@thecuriousreader.in with the subject line: Fan Fiction: Superhero Contest
  9. Entries must be received before midnight (IST) June 29, 2018. THE DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO MIDNIGHT (IST) JULY 1, 2018.
  10. All entries are read and scored by The Curious Reader and Leaping Windows.
  11. The top 3 entries will win prizes and get published on The Curious Reader.

*Extra credit will be given to those who DO NOT write about Batman.

Terms and Conditions

Please read the rules carefully before submitting your entry via email to writing@thecuriousreader.in. Entries not complying with the competition rules may be disqualified. Multiple entries are allowed.

Eligibility
  1. Entrants must be 18 years or over on the closing date.
  2. Entrants must be residents of Indian.
  3. Entries must be in English.
  4. Entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not have been published or accepted for publication elsewhere in print or online including blogs or personal websites.
  5. Entries must be fan fiction based on superheroes without superpowers, and may be written in any style or form. You are not required to stick to canon.
  6. There is no fee for entering this contest.
  7. Employees, associates, friends and family members of The Curious Reader team and the Leaping Windows team are not eligible to enter the contest.
Format
  1. Entries must not be more than 500 words. An overage of 10% is permitted. Entries over the word limit will be automatically disqualified.
  2. Entries must include your name and email.
  3. Entries will only be accepted in the following format: Microsoft Word Document (.doc or .docx).
  4. The filename of your entry should be the same as your title. If you want to submit an untitled entry, use the first five words of your entry as the filename.
  5. You may send in accompanying artwork as a high-resolution .jpeg or .png file.

 

Submission
  1. Entries should be emailed to writing@thecuriousreader.in with the subject line: Fan Fiction: Superhero Contest
  2. Corrections may not be made once a submission has been received. Proofread your entry before submitting.
  3. We reserve the right to edit the submission as we deem fit. However, any significant edits will be run by the author before publication.
  4. Entries must be received before midnight (IST) June 29, 2018. THE DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO MIDNIGHT (IST) JULY 1, 2018.
  5. There is no limit to the number of entries an entrant may make.
  6. Each entry should be submitted separately.
  7. Entrants are allowed to supply a link to their personal website or social media profile, which will be published along with the article if it were to win. We reserve the right to not publish links that are not directly relevant to entrants or their writing or that we deem to inappropriate.
  8. Entries will be acknowledged by email.
  9. If you do not receive a confirmation email (don’t forget to check your spam) please contact Devanshi at devanshi@thecuriousreader.in.
  10. Entrants are responsible for completing the submission process correctly and alerting us to any problems they encounter. We accept no liability for entries not received due to a failure on the part of the entrant to follow the submission process correctly.
Disqualification
  1. Any entry which is found to have been plagiarised or previously published will be disqualified.
  2. The entry must not insult any race, gender, religion, and/or traditions or customs. Violators will be disqualified and will bear full responsibility.
  3. Entries submitted after the deadline will be disqualified.
Determination of Winners
  1. All entries are read and scored by The Curious Reader and Leaping Windows.
  2. The top 3 entries will win prizes and get published on The Curious Reader.
  3. The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  4. Extra credit will be given to those who DO NOT write about Batman.
Winning Entries
  1. The first prize winner will get a gift worth ₹2000, the second prize winner will get a gift worth ₹1000, and the third prize winner will get a gift worth ₹500.
  2. The winners will be announced on The Curious Reader no later than one month after the closing date and will also be contacted individually.
  3. The first, second, and third placed entries will be published on The Curious Reader within three months after the closing date.
Copyright
  1. Worldwide copyright of each entry remains with the author; however, the winners of the first, second, and third place prizes grant The Curious Reader:
    • the right to publish their entry before anyone else in print or online.
    • non-exclusive rights to their entry, including the right to display their entry indefinitely on the TCR website and the right to include their entry in an anthology.
  2. Entrants give TCR permission to publish their entry even if they do not win a prize, and grant TCR:
    • the right to publish their entry before anyone else in print or online.
    • non-exclusive rights to their entry, including the right to display their entry indefinitely on the TCR website and the right to include their entry in an anthology.
  3. Where an entry is not published on the TCR website within 6 months of the close of the contest, all rights revert back to the entrant.
Acceptance of Terms

The information given in these Rules is correct; however, TCR reserves the right to change any of the above without prior notice.

SUBMISSION OF ENTRY CONFIRMS ACCEPTANCE OF THE RULES. 

FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE RULES MAY RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION.
